Great Britain Junior Target Shooting Squad
The National Squads exist to provide intensive training for shooters who already represent Great Britain in international matches and win medals, and for those who aspire to do so
It follows that only shooters who have a genuine desire to become medal-winners,and who have the necessary dedication, enthusiasm, self-discipline and talent to do so, are taken into the Squads. Since there is only very limited funding available for elite shooting in Britain, it also follows that such shooters must have the means to support the cost of their shooting - or in the case of Juniors, that their families are ready, willing and able to do so.
To win major international medals Junior shooters will have to learn to produce (reliably, not just once in a while) scores in excess of 595 prone, 1170 or 575 in 3P, 590 or 395 for air rifle, 580 or 385 for air pistol. There is no point in hiding the fact that this takes an awful lot of hard work by the shooter - it can never be achieved if shooting is regarded as a twice-a-week hobby!
All Junior Squad members must make a firm commitment to do the following:-
Attend the Squad's three major annual events:
1. A 4-day training camp at Easter
2. A one-week tour of Germany in May, with international matches at Oldenburg and Suhl
3. A 4-day international match at Bisley in August
Attend at least half of the monthly training weekends which are held at Bisley and regional venues.
Compete in the relevant NSRA national meetings; i.e. the Airgun Championships in February and/or the ISSF Championship in June
Complete at least two training assessment shoots per month on their home range or at other open competitions.
Allowances are made for academic examination periods or illness/injury, but nothing else!
The starting point for almost all Juniors is the Development Squad. Membership of this enables Juniors of any age and standard to accelerate their progress by training alongside the official National Junior Squad. There is no minimum age or qualifying score laid down for the Development Squad; we have accepted shooters as young as 11 years old, and people who have been shooting for less than six months. Membership is by invitation to those who satisfy the National Coaches that they have the necessary potential and who are prepared to make the commitment set out above.
Our Great Britain junior shooters brought home a team and individual gold medal in the World Championships.
As the best juniors in the world at the prone discipline, and excellent representatives of young people in this country today we could not be prouder of the whole team and their success.
The Great Britain National Junior Rifle and Pistol Squad members are young people from the age of twelve to twenty, they are not the youths you see hanging about the streets, or causing trouble, stealing cars, or drunken antics, they would not do any of these things, for the slightest misdemeanour and they would lose the sport that they love so much.
There is real need for you as shooters, sports fans, and people of this country to show support for junior shooting in this country, we are not the receivers of money from sport uk, or the lottery, our funding to train to juniors depends on the support from people like you and me.
All the managers and coaches working with the Junior Squad give their time and expertise free of charge, your contribution will allow us to find more juniors and train them to international standards, and think of the pride you will feel when in the years to come you see a Great Britain shooter collecting a medal, and you will now that the shooter standing there, started with a little help that you gave to a member of the Great Britain National Junior Rifle and Pistol Squad.
GIVE TODAY AND GENEROUSLY
THANK YOU.
